# Roles of Prototyping

In this course, the objective is to understand the four different roles of prototyping in design research and to explore the methodology of first-person perspective iterative design interventions.

What is First Person Perspective (1PP) : In a 1st person perspective, the designer is part of a system within the existing social structures.

This 4 roles are :

* The prototype as an experimental component
* The prototype as a means of inquiry
* The protoype as a research archetype
* The process of prototyping as a vehicle of inquiry

## Activity 2 :

In this activity, we will reflect on the various roles that prototypes play in design research. We’ll think about which roles we have used in the past and consider how we can incorporate additional roles into our practice moving forward.

For this activity, I worked on the prototyping that Javi did during his time in the hospital. His prototyping focused on a medical mask for patient respiration. The project involved 3D scanning the patient's face and then creating a silicone mold to make the mask for each patient.

For my prototype, I decided to create a mask with three different parts to better fit the faces of the patients. The goal is to test this prototype on different populations to account for various face shapes and to develop four final masks that can fit different facial forms, eliminating the need to produce a new mask for each patient every time.

## Activity 3 :

Perform a 1PP individual Design Intervention and make a video of 1-3 minutes.

# Agent Instructions: Querying This Documentation

If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter:

```
GET https://auxence-daillen-organisation.gitbook.io/auxence-daillen/terms/term-1/design-studio-01/roles-of-prototyping.md?ask=<question>
```

The question should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
